Abraham’s emotional guidance system is truly simple to use – yet many spiritual entrepreneurs I speak with make this key Abraham-Hicks teaching harder to work with than it needs to be.
Here’s the core concept of the emotional guidance system… ready? OK, this is it: good feels good and bad feels bad.
Yep, that’s all there is to it!
Still, it’s easy to feel confused by this simple explanation, because most of us have been taught by our parents, teachers and other authority figures that we can’t trust our own feelings.
We’ve been taught that when we put our own happiness first, we are selfish, inconsiderate, and un-spiritual. We’ve also been taught that it’s wrong to feel angry – especially with authority figures. We’ve been taught that self-sacrifice is noble and desire is wrong.
No wonder most of distrust our own feelings. We’ve pretty much got it all backwards.
The reason Abraham states “we teach selfishness” is this: when we feel good (happy, pleased, satisfied, fulfilled, enthusiastic, passionate, loving, appreciative etc.), our feeling is the indicator that we’re in complete alignment with source energy. The primary emotion of source energy is love.
On the other hand, when we feel bad (discouraged, afraid, worried, irritated, dissatisfied, critical, powerless, uncertain etc.), our feeling is the indicator that we’re completely out of alignment with what our Inner Being knows to be true. The primary emotion of the human-made mind is fear.
It’s time we began to trust our own feelings again, the way we did as infants, when we cooed from happiness and cried from hunger. Every one of us was born a complete master of the emotional guidance system!
Our emotional guidance system was given to us for a reason
Spirit, or pure love, created us from itself and as itself. Spirit designed us to have an infallible way to know when we’re a match to our inner spiritual truth – and when we aren’t. That way we can always know if what we’re thinking and feeling is the absolute truth of any situation – or a false interpretation of it.
We were designed by the universe to be able to notice our feelings and to choose the ones we prefer. Nothing can take away our innate power to choose how we feel.
If you notice that you easily slip into negative emotion more than you’d like, and you wonder what to do about that, just do this:
Acknowledge that what you’re thinking and feeling in the moment cannot be spiritually true, because it doesn’t feel loving.
Through this acknowledgment you begin to separate your true, eternal Self from the human-created mind that has become accustomed to fear-based thinking.
This step is all it takes to begin using your emotional guidance system to strengthen your alignment with spiritual truth. Every time you consciously remind yourself that your negative thoughts and emotions cannot possibly be aligned with the universe – and therefore cannot be spiritually true – you enhance your ability to discern and act on your emotional guidance system.
Use truth to separate yourself from the tyranny of fear-based thinking. Insist on knowing and following your divine good-feeling nature. Allow your emotional guidance system to lead you along the path of feeling good.
