Posted by Andrea Conway Law of Attraction coach for small business success
Listening to spiritual entrepreneur and author Mike Dooley speak at the International Association of Conscious and Creative Writers symposium yesterday, I felt a rush of appreciation for just how darn practical he is – particularly about small business success.
Mike understands the necessity to take action.
My biggest disagreement with much Law of Attraction material is the idea that you can “just” think or feel or visualize – and you will receive everything your heart desires.
Not too likely…
Yes, using your mind is important. Yes, being still and knowing is also important. But unless you bring in action, it’s difficult to move forward.
And action – as Mike Dooley is so helpful at reminding us – is “often demoralizing at the start.”
Only I would edit “often” to “nearly always.”
just about all of us have some belief adjustments to make, including The Universal Big One Mike mentioned yesterday: the “Who am I to do X” belief. It crops up for just about anyone who decides to start a business. It’s the biggest reason you never start – or give up too soon.
Who am I to do X can also come up after you’ve had success but feel the inner promptings to take your work in a new direction. I’ve worked with many established business owners who encountered an onslaught of fear-of-failure beliefs on deciding to start a blog, let go of a profitable but energy-killing client, or chart an entirely new course.
Mike was kind enough to share with listeners these facts about starting his Notes from the Universe daily messages:
– He was out of a job with no prospects in sight when he began writing a weekly email to his list from his former t-shirt business.
– He had a big case of “who am I to do this” because he had no income whatsoever, yet was giving others advice.
– He started writing because he had nothing else left to try: “I did it to avoid doing nothing.”
– Many weeks more people left his mailing list than joined it.
That last point is so important, because every entrepreneur experiences it. Why? Because our early – and later – disappointments in business are designed to help us build stamina and resilience – two essential qualities for success.
If it all flowed in easily and magically, we would never discover that our own choice to stay committed is the true power behind our ultimate success.
Today Mike Dooley has hundreds of thousands of people on his mailing list, not to mention books, world tours and his appearance in The Secret. His advice: “You can’t sit around waiting for an epiphany. . . never do nothing.”
For spiritual entrepreneurs and everyone else: action is the key. Not fear-driven, frantic action. But action taken from trust that the universe will lead you on your path – if you will just start walking.
